Who buys business data, and why?

· By Erin · 6 min read

Short answer

AI companies and specialized data buyers license real-world operational records to train systems on how work happens. They care about the pattern of the work, not your product secret. Aftergold is not the buyer — we help you navigate the ones who are.

Who are the buyers?

Typically AI companies and the firms that supply them. Some sell into major frontier labs. Some run RL gyms — training arenas that need real operational history to look like the real world.

A buyer asks how valuable the dataset is to their training. Aftergold asks what those years of work are worth to the business that created them, and how to meet the market without forgetting that.

What are they not buying?

They are usually not trying to recreate your company or take your secret sauce. They want how information moved: a lead, a conversation, a task, a decision, an outcome.

That trail is people. Aftergold will not talk about it as if it appeared on its own. Read Who buys company data — and why?

A simulator that trains AI through trial and error. Building one takes large amounts of real operational data. See the FAQ on RL gyms.
